GEORGE ELIOT SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE GCSE SUCCESS
Students from The George Eliot School in Nuneaton are celebrating as GCSE grades are revealed today. Around 158 pupils received grades for over 27 different qualifications including maths and English.
Principal Homeira Zakary said, “We are delighted to celebrate the success of our pupils during a year that has been challenging for everyone. I am very proud of our strong team that provided support from a distance to all pupils who continued to study at home during the coronavirus closure period. The whole school community worked hard to make it easy for pupils and parents to access learning materials and we made huge strides in improving the remote learning experience during lockdown in close consultation with parents.
“We worked diligently and with integrity to ensure our estimated grades are an accurate reflection of our pupils' ability. We are very proud of our pupils as we know they deserve the grades they have achieved. It is fantastic to be able to share the success stories of our dedicated pupils today.”
Luke Betteridge gained grade 6s in history and English literature, and grade 5s for maths and combined science. He is moving on to North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) to study hospitality and catering and has an ambition to open his own restaurant in the future. Luke said that his teachers were a huge source of encouragement and always made time for him.
Lucy Knight was awarded a grade 8 for food and nutrition, grade 5s for English language, literature, and maths. She is going on to NWSLC to study health and social care and wants to become a paramedic.
Amongst the pupils who have made the most progress in the year are Owen Chattaway who was awarded five grade 6s and four grade 5s, and Harry Burdus with two grade 8s, two grade 7s. They are moving on to NWSLC to study computer support and graphic design respectively.
High performing students this year included Hannah Lewis who was awarded seven grade 9s, two grade 8s, and a grade 7 and will be attending St Thomas More Catholic School and Sixth Form College to study BTECs in sport, psychology, and biology.
Sophie Williamson achieved seven grade 9s, a grade 8 and a grade 7 and is moving on to study at Higham Lane School to study biology, English language, and psychology. She said, “I would like to say thank you all the staff for their support over the last five years. I appreciate everything the school has done to support me and the opportunities I have been given. Special thanks to Mrs Gadsby and Miss Taylor in science who have helped me to manage in Year 11.”
Matthew Jackson was awarded seven grade 9s and two grade 8s and is moving on to King Edward VI College to study maths, law, and economics. Mathew aims to become a lawyer in the future. He said, “I had lots of good teachers who were always pushing me. Teachers often gave up their time after school to help me with the areas I needed to focus on. Special thanks to Miss Parker, Miss Havard, Miss Gadsby and Miss Waseme.”
Stella Deugo was awarded six grade 8s and three grade 7s. She is moving on to Lawrence Sheriff School to study A Levels in biology, chemistry and maths and aims to become a doctor. Stella would like to thank the school for all the leadership opportunities she had which have helped her to grow in confidence. She said, “Miss Zakary has been inspirational and supported me to ensured that I aimed high. I am grateful for all the extra support to improve my maths.”
Lahang Angdembe was awarded two grades 8s, three grade 7s, two grade 6s and a grade 5. He is moving on to King Edward VI College to study computer science. He said, “A huge thank you to all the staff who have helped me on my journey. The staff at George Eliot School always want the best for us.”
Simon Lomax, Executive Principal for the Midland Academies Trust said, “This year has been exceptionally difficult for our students and I am proud of the way that they have continued with their studies thanks to the ongoing and professional support of their teachers. The cancellation of GCSE exams was unprecedented and highly disappointing, but we are confident that the grades predicted by our teaching staff accurately reflect the achievement of our students and reward them for their progress throughout the year. Students at GCSE level have been awarded the higher of their teacher prediction or the exam boards’ calculated grade (the calculations that they have made are based on a blend of school predictions, historical results, and national data.)
“Achieving well at GCSE, especially in the core subjects of maths and English, is so important to students’ future progress. Our teachers have set high expectations of all our students which was maintained throughout the lockdown period, and they have consistently been supported to maintain their learning and continue to progress. Given this unique situation, our focus at this time will be on supporting our students and doing everything we can to ensure that they progress to the next stage of education, training, or employment.
